Documents confirming knowledge of the Polish language
Candidates who apply for admission to studies on the basis of a certificate other than the Polish Matura and do not have citizenship of a European Union country must submit a document confirming their knowledge of the language of study at least at the B2 level for enrolment.
List of recognized documents in accordance with Annex No. 1 to the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of July 30, 2025.
- certificate of knowledge of the Polish language referred to in Article 11a, paragraph 2 of the Act of 7 October 1999 on the Polish language (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1556 and of 2025, item 622)
- a certificate confirming knowledge of the Polish language issued by the institution:
– European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages (ECL) or
– telc GmbH, WBT Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH (TELC) - a certificate of completion of a preparatory course for taking up studies, referred to in Article 60, paragraph 4 of the Act of 12 December 2013 on foreigners (Journal of Laws of 2024, items 769, 1222 and 1688 and of 2025, items 619, 621 and 622), lasting no less than 9 months
Documents confirming knowledge of the Polish language at a level of proficiency not lower than B2 also include:
- a diploma of completion of studies with Polish as the language of instruction issued by a university operating in the higher education and science system of the Republic of Poland,
- a diploma of completion of first-cycle studies, second-cycle studies or uniform master's studies in the field of philology in the field of Polish language or applied linguistics issued by a foreign university, together with a diploma supplement or a certificate confirming that the number of hours of classes in Polish language was at least 500,
- a certificate of acquisition of the right to practice the profession of a sworn translator issued by the Minister of Justice, referred to in Article 5, paragraph 2 of the Act of 25 November 2004 on the profession of a sworn translator (Journal of Laws of 2019, item 1326), or a certificate confirming entry on the list of sworn translators
* Certificate of Polish language proficiency
The Polish language proficiency certificate is an official certification Polish language proficiency. This document is required for foreigners wishing to obtain Polish citizenship. Polish language proficiency certificates are issued at the following levels:
- B1, B2, C1 and C2 – for adults,
- B1, B2 – for children and teenagers.
Certificates are issued by the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language, and exams are conducted by authorized entities, including those outside of Poland. Detailed information about the certificates can be found on the website certificatepolski.pl.
