Dietetics – first-cycle studies

The World Health Organization reports that over 400 million adults currently suffer from obesity, and approximately 1.6 billion are overweight. Furthermore, obesity is classified as one of the top ten diseases and risk factors contributing to the increase in deaths. For this reason, it is called the scourge of the 21st century.
The main causes of illness are: improper diet, including overeating, lack of attention to the proper composition of food, inaccurate and rushed eating, and lifestyle: lack of exercise and excess stress.
So, what should you eat to stay healthy and full of energy? How can you help someone who already suffers from these types of illnesses? The answer may be dietitian – a specialist with knowledge of proper nutrition, knowing the principles of functioning of the human body and at the same time having therapeutic predispositions.
The intended learning outcomes address the patient not only physically but also psychologically. By studying dietetics, you will learn how the human body works and the processes occurring within it. You will learn to design appropriately tailored diets for both sick and healthy individuals, taking into account their genetic characteristics, food intolerances, allergies, lifestyle, and personal preferences. You will gain knowledge about the design and implementation of technological processes used in food production. You will learn methods for assessing the nutrition and dietary habits of adolescents, adults, the elderly, pregnant women, individuals practicing various sports, and in various environmental conditions. You will also learn how to communicate with patients (and their families), what to pay attention to, and what to consider during conversations.
Over the course of three years of study, you will acquire many new skills, including learning how to conduct a nutritional interview, provide individual and group counseling, and operate and utilize specialized equipment designed to identify selected food ingredients and prepare meals. You will be able to plan and implement appropriate nutritional management to prevent and treat diet-related diseases. You will also learn the principles of drug-food interactions.
As a university with a practical profile, we place great emphasis on practical classes and professional internships. We have teaching facilities that ensure the best possible acquisition of essential skills, and we employ highly qualified staff, including leading specialists in the Tricity area.

Recommendations
It was a new experience for me; I'd never worked in a kitchen before. The chef's level of knowledge and management was impressive; he kept a cool head when we had to serve about 30 meals almost simultaneously. We talked a lot about the problems of food waste in Poland and around the world, as well as about proper nutrition among Polish people. I didn't expect to learn so much in such a short time, and put it to practical use. I highly recommend it, and if I ever have another restaurant internship, I'll definitely go back.
Karol, a dietetics student, completed his professional internship at the Sopot Municipal Brewery thanks to cooperation with the University Career Office.
For many years, I have been a member of the teaching staff at the Gdańsk Medical Academy of Applied Sciences. I teach courses in "Fundamentals of Human Nutrition" and "Human Nutrition," where students gain knowledge on topics such as nutrients, the energy value of food, and the impact of dietary patterns on the prevention of lifestyle diseases. The courses consist of a theoretical lecture and many hours of practical sessions, where we develop menus, take anthropometric measurements necessary to assess nutritional status, and become familiar with clinical nutrition, for example, by testing special medical supplements used in nutritional therapy. Another course I teach is "Dietary Counseling." These classes are held in the final semester of studies; their highly practical focus prepares dietitians for independent work in a practice or hospital. During these classes, we explore the elements of psychodietetics, patient communication, and learn how to conduct consultations and develop individual recommendations. Additionally, we gain knowledge on running a business and the costs of running and launching a practice. In this course, we utilize the knowledge acquired during three years of study to solve therapeutic problems through case studies. As a lecturer who is also a practicing dietitian, I weave descriptions of practical work with patients throughout the course, educating students on how to provide counseling and design delicious and healthy menus. I highly encourage you to start your education at GAM; the university guarantees both theory and practice!
